      36、回答36-55题

By the mid-nineteenth century, mass production of paper patterns, the appearance of the home sewing machine, and the convenience of mail order catalogs brought fashionable clothing into the American borne.By the early twentieth century, home economists working in extension and outreach programs taught women how to use paper patterns to improve the fit and efficiency of new garments as well as how to update existing ones.Teachers of home economics traditionally made home sewing a critical part of their curriculum, emphasizing self-sufficiency and resourcefulness for young women. However, with the increasing availability of mass-produced clothing in catalogs and department stores, more and more women preferred buying garments to making them.As a result, home economists shifted their attention to consumer education.Through field study, analysis, and research, they became experts on the purchase and preservation of ready-to-wear clothing for the family, offering budgeting instruction targeted at adolescent girls.Modern home sewing made it possible for American women to transcend their economic differences and geographic locations with clothing that was increasingly standardized. The democratization of fashion continued through the twentieth century as the ready-to-wear market expanded and home sewing became more of a pastime than a necessity.

According to the passage, the appearance of mail order catalogs altered the role of home economists because________

A.mass-produced clothing rendered their jobs completely useless

B.women ceased sewing so home economists had to teach other subjects

C.their focus shifted to instruction on budgeting and buying and preserving clothing

D.the emphasis on field study and research increased for students in home economics courses

37、 This passage focuses on the________

A.changing role of home economists as a result of changes in the world

B.impact of ready-to-wear and mass-produced fashion on home sewing

      C.modernization of home sewing

D.effects of home economists on home sewing

      38、

As used in paragraph 3 ,the best definition for democratization is________

A.transitioning to a more democratic political regime

B.becoming more affordable to the lower class

C.gradually becoming acceptable for an entire nation

D.becoming widely available to common people

      39、

Based on information in the passage ,it can be inferred that home sewing allowed American women to do all of the following except________

A.copy fashions they had seen elsewhere

B.create less expensive versions of current styles

C.create garments for pleasure rather than necessity

D.become experts on budgeting and consumerism

Man's story in China began many thousands of years ago. Remains of an early form of man discovered in China, known as Peking Man, indicate that Stone Age men lived in the area as long as 500,000 years ago. During the centuries that followed, their descendants laid the foundations of civilization in China.

Throughout its history, China has been a rich source of inventions. Silk, the compass, tea and porcelain originated there. In addition, they are responsible for the invention of paper and printing. The Chinese had used ink as early as 1 200 B. C. , an excellent type which they made from lampblack and which is known in English as India ink or China ink. By the end of the first century A. D. , the Chinese had invented paper.

The Chinese also invented printing. Early Chinese printing is called block printing. The printer carved raised characters on a block of wood, wet the surface of the characters with ink, and pressed sheets of paper against them. Printers in the 11th century went on to invent movable type of baked clay. The characters of the movable type could be rearranged to form different words and thus be used over and over again. The Chinese alphabet has about 40 thousand characters. Because of the difficulty of producing so many pieces of type, most Chinese printers continued to use block printing.

When Abraham Lincoln was a lawyer in rural Illinois, he and a certain judge in town once got to bantering with one another about horse trading. The upshot of the discussion was that they agreed that the next morning, at nine o'clock, they would meet in front of the general store and make a trade. Each would bring a horse, unseen by anyone up to that hour. If either backed out of the deal, he would forfeit $25. The money from each man was held by the local banker.

The next morning, at the appointed hour, the Judge, came up the dirt road, leading the sorriest looking specimen of a horse ever seen in those parts of Illinois. The large crowd viewing the spectacle burst out laughing, already knowing that Abe Lincoln was bound to get the worst of the deal. A poorer horse just couldn't exist anywhere and still be walking.

In a few minutes, however, Mr. Lincoln was seen approaching the general store carrying something quite large and bulky on his shoulders. As he drew nearer, the crowd saw what it was, and great shouts and laughter broke out. The shouts and laughter soon broke into a thunderous roar when Mr. Lincoln, looking carefully and seriously over the Judge's animal, set down his sawhorse (锯木架) , and exclaimed, "Well, Judge, this is the first time I ever got the worst of it in a horse trade. This giant flower is a parasite--it needs another plant to live on.It lacks the structures needed tosurvive alone. The rafflesia has no stem or leaves. It is all flower. It attaches itself to the roots of other plants and sucks their juices. The flower's favorite home is the root of the vine, which grows above ground. The rafflesia seems to burst right out of the forest floor. Its blossom weighs fifteen pounds! It has thick, spotted petals that give off a rotten smell. The center is about the size of a household bucket. After a rain, it may hold up to twelve pints of water!

After the rafflesia dies, it becomes a pool of thick liquid in which its seeds float.Elephants

wandering through the forest step into the mushy pool, and the seeds glue themselves to their feet.As the animals stomp through the forest, their sticky feet pick up twigs and leaves. The elephants try to rid themselves of the sticky mess, in the same way people try to get bubble gum off their shoes. The elephants rub their feet against the roots of the vine.In no time, seeds left on the vine grow into more monstrous flowers !
